Julia Fiona Roberts was born in Atlanta on October 28, 1967 in the home of Betty Lou Bredemus and Walter Grady Roberts. She is the fourth Roberts generation to live in Atlanta starting with her great-grandfather, a farmer John Pendleton Roberts. Her father's passion for theatre was inherited by her. in theater from a young childhood. While attending Emory University in 1952 he acted in productions on campus and elsewhere in Atlanta. In 1953, he joined the Air Force and while stationed at Biloxi in Mississippi, he acted in the production of Betty Lou Bredemus. They were married in 1955. Their child, Eric Anthony, was born in the year 1956. In 1957, the couple left the military and Walter enrolled at Tulane University in New Orleans Louisiana. Walter worked for Atlanta Academy Theater and Harrington Scenic and Lighting Studio. In the year 1960, the family moved to Decatur Georgia. Walter and Betty Lou started production in 1964 for the local kids' Saturday morning TV show Bum Bum and His Buddies, which they funded themselves. The following year they started The Actors and Writers Workshop which operated for a period of six years. They welcomed in 1965 two more children into their lives: Lelisa Billingsley and Julia Billingsley.
